Introduction
Pneumatic butterfly valve actuators use compressed air to open, close and modulate butterfly valves. They are widely used in industrial automation systems in oil, chemicals, water treatment, metallurgy and power generation. Limit adjustment is essential to ensure that a valve opens and closes at the correct positions. Accurate adjustment provides full travel and correct signals; poor adjustment can cause leakage due to incomplete closure or, in serious cases, an accident caused by unintended operation. This article breaks the procedure into 5 steps for engineering personnel.
1. Preparation: safety first
Before adjustment, establish safe working conditions:
- Confirm that the actuator is correctly installed in the piping system.
- Check the air supply and confirm that the pneumatic system operates normally.
- Close the valve and disconnect the actuator air supply to ensure safe operation.
2. Set the initial position
Start from fully closed to establish the adjustment reference:
- Manually move the valve to the fully closed position.
- Check the stem and disc positions to confirm closure.
- Adjust the actuator's mechanical stop screw to match the closed valve position.
3. Adjust the closed-position limit
This step ensures that the valve closes accurately and completely:
- Connect the air supply and let the actuator move the valve to the closed position.
- Check the actuator's limit switch to ensure that it generates a signal when the valve is fully closed.
- Adjust the switch position so it accurately detects and signals full closure.
- Secure the limit switch so it cannot move during operation.
4. Adjust the open-position limit
Use the same approach to accurately set the open side:
- Manually move the valve to the fully open position.
- Check the stem and disc positions to confirm full opening.
- Adjust the actuator's mechanical stop screw to match the open valve position.
- Connect the air supply and let the actuator move the valve to the open position.
- Check that the limit switch generates a signal at full opening.
- Adjust the switch position so it accurately detects and signals full opening.
- Secure the limit switch to prevent movement.
5. Test and verify
Adjustment is only complete after repeated testing:
- Perform multiple opening and closing cycles, making sure the valve reaches the specified open and closed positions every time.
- Check the limit switch outputs and confirm correct signals during each operation.
- If positioning or signals are incorrect, readjust the switches and stop screws until the expected results are achieved.
Conclusion
Limit adjustment is about accurate closing, accurate opening and accurate feedback. Remember the two key components: mechanical stop screws control physical position, while limit switches provide signal feedback. Both must be correctly adjusted and firmly secured. Accurate adjustment helps prevent problems caused by incorrect valve positioning and supports safe automated system operation.
