Introduction

Stainless steel pneumatic actuators are widely used in automated industry, often to control the opening and closing of butterfly valves, ball valves and control valves. In actual use, however, the actuator sometimes "does not respond". Following the troubleshooting sequence, this article sorts the common causes of a non-responding stainless steel pneumatic actuator into 5 directions to help you locate the root cause item by item.

1. Check One: Air Supply Pressure

The power source of a pneumatic actuator is air pressure; if the air supply pressure is insufficient, the actuator cannot work normally:

  • Check whether the air filter regulator provides sufficient pressure

  • If the pressure is insufficient, you may need to adjust or replace the regulator

2. Check Two: Solenoid Valve

The solenoid valve controls the direction of air flow to the pneumatic actuator; if it fails, the actuator naturally cannot respond:

  • Check whether the solenoid valve is clogged or its venting action is abnormal

  • Clean the solenoid valve and replace it if necessary - this usually solves the problem

3. Check Three: Internal Air Pressure

Sometimes the air supply pressure is sufficient but the actuator's internal air pressure does not meet the requirement, so it still does not respond:

  • Check whether the speed controller is clogged - this may be the cause of insufficient internal air pressure

  • Clean or replace the speed controller

4. Check Four: Seals

Seal problems must not be overlooked either:

  • Excessive friction in the seals, or leakage at the seal rings, will affect actuator movement

  • Check these parts and make sure they are in good condition

5. Check Five: Core Parts

If all the checks above still do not solve the problem, inspect the core parts such as the valve core, valve seat and valve stem:

  • Jamming, damage or falling off of these parts may be the root cause of the actuator not responding

6. A Quick Reference for Troubleshooting

Check Item Common Problem Action
Air supply pressure Insufficient pressure Adjust/replace the regulator
Solenoid valve Clogging, abnormal action Clean/replace
Internal air pressure Clogged speed controller Clean/replace
Seals High friction, leakage Inspect and replace
Core parts Valve core/seat/stem jammed or damaged Overhaul and replace

Conclusion

When facing a stainless steel pneumatic actuator that does not respond, the key is patience and care, checking item by item. Following the order "air supply → solenoid valve → internal air pressure → seals → core parts", you can usually find the root cause and take the corresponding measures to repair it.
