Introduction

In recent years, with the global transformation of the energy mix, new energies such as hydrogen energy and LNG (liquefied natural gas) have continued to expand in transport, energy storage and industry. This brings higher requirements for safety, automation level and equipment reliability. In valve automation control, pneumatic actuators, with their features of fast response, high stability and adaptability to complex environments, are becoming key equipment in scenarios such as hydrogen refueling stations and LNG storage and transport.

This article reviews three typical applications, then explains clearly the four factors to watch in selection.

1. Why the New Energy Industry Favors Pneumatic Actuators

New energy operating conditions share two common features: hazardous media and extreme environments. Hydrogen is highly flammable and diffusive, while LNG is stored and transported at extremely low temperature; both scenarios impose requirements on the actuating mechanism that ordinary industrial occasions do not.

The advantages of pneumatic actuators match exactly: powered by compressed air, their working principle requires no electric spark drive and inherently offers an explosion-proof advantage; their structure is relatively simple and their action response is fast, so they can complete shut-off rapidly in an emergency; at the same time they adapt to complex environments such as low temperature and high pressure, and maintenance is relatively convenient. This is also why they are widely used in hydrogen refueling stations and liquefied gas storage and distribution.

2. Typical Application One: Hydrogen Refueling Station Systems

Between the piping and the storage tanks of a hydrogen refueling station, pneumatic actuators are usually paired with ball valves or butterfly valves to achieve rapid opening and closing of the valves.

  • When abnormal pressure, leakage or an emergency shutdown occurs, the actuator can drive the valve to close and cut off the gas supply within an extremely short time, minimizing safety risks

  • The actuator is often interlocked with a solenoid valve and a limit switch to ensure reliable action and to feed the valve status back to the control system

  • Because hydrogen is flammable and explosive, in this scenario the explosion-proof rating comes first, and the accessories and signal circuits must also be configured to explosion-proof requirements

3. Typical Application Two: LNG Storage, Transport and Vaporization Processes

LNG must be stored and transported at low temperature, usually around -162°C. Such conditions impose three hard requirements on the actuating mechanism:

  • Low-temperature performance: action must be flexible at low temperature, with no sticking or delayed opening

  • Seal stability: the seal material must be low-temperature resistant and must not become brittle and crack, otherwise external leakage will occur

  • Action reliability: consistent opening and closing performance over long-term operation

Because pneumatic actuators require no electric spark drive and inherently offer an explosion-proof advantage, they are especially suited to the storage and distribution of liquefied gas. In scenarios such as LNG receiving terminals and tanker unloading areas, pneumatic actuators play a key role in flow control and safety shut-off.

4. Typical Application Three: Distributed Energy and Supporting Chemical Facilities

In distributed energy power stations and chemical process units, pneumatic actuators are mostly used for remote control and automated regulation. For example, in gas turbine fuel supply and hydrogen pipeline regulation, the actuator runs in coordination with the control system to achieve stable flow regulation and process optimization, improving operating efficiency and safety assurance.

The feature of such scenarios is continuous operation + a need for regulation, so selection must consider both reliable switching and, with a positioner, the regulation accuracy and long-term stability.

5. Four Factors to Watch in Selection

First, torque matching and redundancy design. The opening and closing torque of a valve is affected by many factors such as diameter, seal structure and medium pressure. When selecting, after calculating the basic torque, add a certain safety factor, to avoid insufficient driving force due to condition fluctuations or valve wear.

Second, adaptability to the environment and operating conditions. For a hydrogen refueling station environment, special attention should be paid to the explosion-proof rating, choosing products that meet the corresponding standard; for LNG applications, ensure the actuator acts flexibly at low temperature and that the seal material is low-temperature resistant and does not become brittle and crack; for chemical environments, corrosion resistance must also be considered, to suit acid and alkaline media or impurity-containing gases.

Third, control mode and accessory configuration. Actuators are divided into single-acting (spring-return) and double-acting, and control functions into on/off and modulating. In practice, accessories such as solenoid valves, limit switches and valve positioners are often also required to meet automation and remote monitoring needs.

Fourth, reliability and ease of maintenance. New energy equipment generally needs stable long-term operation, so selection should consider compactness of structure, component life and ease of maintenance. An actuator with a modular design allows quick on-site inspection and part replacement, noticeably reducing downtime.

6. Future Trends and Key Review

Intelligentization: through integrated sensors and smart positioners, real-time monitoring of valve status is achieved, facilitating remote diagnosis and predictive maintenance.

High-reliability design: greater emphasis on sealing and life testing, to suit stable long-term operation under complex and extreme conditions.

Energy saving and environmental protection: optimizing air supply utilization and reducing compressed air consumption, to further improve energy efficiency.

Key review: the value of pneumatic actuators in the new energy industry is concentrated in three scenarios — rapid shut-off and explosion-proof safety at hydrogen refueling stations, low-temperature-resistant sealing and reliable action in LNG storage and transport, and remote regulation in distributed energy and chemicals. Selection should do four things well: leave a torque safety factor, set explosion-proof and low-temperature-/corrosion-resistant configurations by environment, fit single/double-acting and accessories by control mode, and choose a structure with good reliability and maintainability for long-term operation. When application and selection match up, the actuator can truly become a part of the safe operation of a new energy project.

Conclusion

The application of pneumatic actuators in the new energy industry has expanded from single valve driving to a systematic automation control link. In hydrogen refueling stations, LNG storage and transport, and distributed energy systems, it is both an important guarantee of safe operation and a key link in driving the industry's intelligent and green development.
