Pneumatic actuators are key operating components in automation control systems. Their condition directly affects the stability and reliability of the entire production process. To help users operate and maintain them more effectively, this article addresses three of the most frequently asked questions.

1. How Do You Maintain a Pneumatic Actuator?

Regular maintenance is essential for long-term stable operation. The three most important maintenance tasks are:

  • Check the Air Supply

The cleanliness and stability of the air supply are critical to pneumatic actuator performance.

Regularly check the cleanliness of compressed air and ensure that it is filtered and purified to keep dust and contaminants out of the pneumatic system. Contaminants accelerate seal wear and can even block solenoid valves and air passages.

Also ensure that pressure remains stable and meets the actuator's working pressure requirement, typically 0.4-0.8MPa. Too little pressure produces insufficient output force; too much can damage seals.

Recommendation: Install a filter regulator, or pneumatic FRL unit, at the air inlet to filter contaminants, stabilize pressure and add lubrication to the air.

  • Inspect and Replace Seals

Seals are wear-prone components in pneumatic actuators and are among the most common sources of faults.

Inspect sealing rings, piston rings and other seals regularly, replacing them promptly if they show ageing, hardening or damage. Inspection at least once a year is generally recommended; shorten the interval for high-cycle applications.

  • Lubrication

Appropriate lubrication reduces internal friction and extends equipment life.

Following the manufacturer's recommendations, regularly apply oil or grease to key moving parts. A lubricator can add the correct quantity of oil to the compressed air to lubricate the cylinder and piston continuously.

2. How Can You Improve Pneumatic Actuator Efficiency?

Efficiency depends on several factors, particularly design quality, operating environment and maintenance. The following measures can help:

  • Choose a Well-Designed Actuator

Good design reduces internal friction and air leakage, improving energy conversion efficiency. Rack-and-pinion actuators, such as the AT/GT series, can achieve energy conversion efficiencies above 70%, placing them among the more efficient types on the market.

  • Choose High-Quality Components

High-quality seals, bearings and cylinder materials improve performance, durability and reliability. Although the initial cost may be slightly higher, they are more economical over the full service life.

  • Select the Correct Size

Choose an actuator specification that matches the actual load and speed requirements. Oversizing wastes money, while undersizing results in insufficient force and poor efficiency. Consult the manufacturer's technical team if uncertain.

  • Avoid Overload

Do not operate a pneumatic actuator continuously under overload or excessive speed, as this reduces efficiency and may damage the equipment.

3. Common Faults and Quick Troubleshooting

Fault 1: No Movement

Possible causes and remedies: Check that air pressure is sufficient and within the actuator's rated operating range. Check that the solenoid valve works correctly and electrical connections are secure. Check for blocked air passages or kinked tubing.

Fault 2: Slow or Stick-Slip Movement

Possible causes and remedies: Worn seals can cause internal leakage; inspect and replace them. Blocked air passages reduce inlet and exhaust performance; clean the air circuit. Insufficient lubrication increases friction; replenish the lubricating oil.

Fault 3: Limit Switch Failure

Possible causes and remedies: Check the limit switch electrical connections. Verify mechanical position adjustment and reset the limit positions. If the switch itself is damaged, replace it.

Fault 4: Leakage

Possible causes and remedies: Check all actuator connections and seals. Replace aged or damaged end-cap sealing rings. A scratched or worn cylinder body needs repair or replacement.

These are some of the most common pneumatic actuator problems and their remedies. Regular maintenance and prompt troubleshooting are the best ways to keep equipment operating stably over the long term.
